Introductions & Objectives for Today's Session
Who's here?
What are you hoping to learn?
Today's session
- There will be some showing, some telling, and some doing.
- The "doing" will involve two different wiki platforms: PBwiki (which runs this wiki) and MediaWiki (the software used for Wikipedia, among many other wikis).
- The wikis we'll be working on are viewable to anyone. Most pages of the MediaWiki are publicly editable. This wiki requires a password to edit.
Objectives
- Learn what a wiki is (and isn't)
- Place wikis in the larger context of social software tools
- See examples of how wikis are being used inside & outside libraries
- Identify different wiki software packages
- Formulate criteria for choosing a wiki platform to suit your needs
- Learn the basics of wiki syntax
- Get hands-on practice on two different Wiki platforms
