Today's session

• There will be some showing, some telling, and some doing.

• The "doing" will involve two different wiki platforms: PBwiki (which runs this wiki) and MediaWiki (the software used for Wikipedia, among many other wikis).

• This wiki (PBWiki): http://wikitorium.pbwiki.com
• The other class wiki (MediaWiki): http://meeper.net/wiki

• The wikis we'll be working on are viewable to anyone. Most pages of the MediaWiki are publicly editable. This wiki requires a password to edit.

Objectives

• Learn what a wiki is (and isn't)
• Place wikis in the larger context of social software tools
• See examples of how wikis are being used inside & outside libraries
• Identify different wiki software packages
• Formulate criteria for choosing a wiki platform to suit your needs
• Learn the basics of wiki syntax
• Get hands-on practice on two different Wiki platforms
